The top-class football action is relentless this week. After Newcastle’s visit to Leicester in the Premier League on Monday night, the quarter finals of the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League get going.
As well as this, there are crucial matches in the EFL as those looking for promotion from the Championship play vital games on Tuesday and Wednesday. We’ve picked out our best midweek bets.
Tuesday 8th April
Bayern Munich to beat Inter Milan at 10/11 is our first selection with the previously available even-money disappearing. There was much hilarity last year regarding Harry Kane’s arrival at Bayern coinciding with them not winning the Bundesliga, but things are different now.
Bayern are much more solid, and the Champions League is opening up. We’re not certain they’ll win it, but they can win this leg and potentially get into the semis.
In the Championship, Sheffield United are solid at 4/6 to dismiss Millwall. Burnley are on an amazing run, but that’s sure to end soon and Leeds are wobbling. The Blades may yet stamp their authority on this league, and this is a very winnable home match.
Are Leeds actually falling apart? It’s an accusation that’s been levelled at them. Since beating Sheffield United away, they have won one, drawn four and lost one. It’s not quite title-winning form. Boro are going the other way, winning four, drawing one and losing one.
Boro have home advantage against Leeds on Tuesday. They sit fifth now and are looking to solidify a play-off place. Middlesbrough are big at 10/3 to put Leeds away at the Riverside.
Wednesday 9th April
PSG are short at 2/5 and 4/11, but they can safely be added to any bets. They look like a proper team now, eventually. They still don’t have enough domestic competition, but they’ve been very good in the Champions League and are finally genuine contenders to win it.
Aston Villa are solid and are still hunting for another top four place. They’re on a great run, but they’re not quite at PSG’s level. Another long, hard season may begin to tell when they have to chase this lot around Paris.
Back to the Championship in which we like Oxford to beat QPR. The home side are in need of a new stadium, hopefully they’ll sort that very soon, but for now points are needed more.
Oxford are only 4 points above the relegation zone, so they need this. QPR aren’t much better off with only one point more. Oxford however have beaten Watford recently, lost narrowly to Middlesbrough and beat Sheffield United at the weekend. They can ride this wave to another home win.
Thursday 10th April
Not many people will want to beat Rangers against Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League, even with the distinct advantage of playing at Ibrox. Though there’s been a notable improvement overall in Rangers since Barry Ferguson took over, they continue to prove inconsistent.
Rangers reach a new level in this competition, but another failure at home against Hibs at the weekend as bad prep. Tottenham and Chelsea are both odds-on on Thursday, and they too are not really worth backing for various reasons.
Chelsea may fancy themselves now in the Conference League, but so too will Spanish side Real Betis who play Jagiellonia of Poland. Betis are as short as 2/7, but they look like home bankers and are heading for the semi-finals.
